Father | Oscar Folsom1 |
Mother | Emma Harmon1 |
Notable* | Frances Clara "Frank" Folsom was born in Buffalo, New York on July 21, 1864, and served as First Lady of the United States from 1886 to 1889, and 1893 to 1897. Her father Oscar was a law partner of Grover Cleveland. The future President bought "Frank" her first baby carriage, and administered the Folsom estate after Oscar died. Though Frank and her mother missed Cleveland's inauguration in 1885, they visited him at the White House that spring, and Frank and Grover's friendship turned into romance, despite 27 years' difference in age. They were married in the White House on June 2, 1886, making them the first and only couple to be wed in the executive mansion. Frances' charm as White House hostess won her popularity, and she held two receptions a week, including one on Saturday afternoons, when women with jobs were free to come. Five years after her husband's death at their home "Westland" in Princeton, New Jersey in 1908, she married Thomas J. Preston, Jr., a professor of archaeology, and she remained a figure of note in the Princeton community until her death October 29, 1947. She is buried with President Cleveland in Princeton Cemetery |
