Her father and stepmother were killed in a brutal axe double-murder, on August 4, 1892 in Fall River, Massachusetts. Lizzie was charged and subsequently acquitted, in a trial that is considered a landmark in media coverage of legal proceedings. She was memorialized in a popular jump-rope rhyme:
