Notable* | Heard of Norma Jean Mortenson? Norma Jean Mortenson was born in the charity ward of Los Angeles County Hospital on June 1, 1926, to her Mexican born mother Gladys Pearl Monroe. Her father was probably Charles Stanley Gifford, a salesman for RKO Studios. She was raised by foster parents as Norma Jean Baker; was eventually declared a ward of the state; and legally changed her name to Marilyn Monroe in 1956. She became one of Hollywood's biggest stars, with films such as Some Like It Hot, The Seven Year Itch, The Misfits, and Bus Stop; and with husbands that included Joe Dimaggio and Arthur Miller. She died of an overdose of sleeping pills at her home in Brentwood, California on August 5, 1962. The official cause of death was listed as "probable suicide," but controversy has arisen over the following decades as to whether it might have been accidental, or even a conspiracy involving Pres. John Kennedy and/or Robert Kennedy
