Jeanette "Jennie" Jerome, known also as Lady Randolph Churchill, was an American society beauty, best known to history as the mother of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. She was born in Brooklyn, New York on January 9, 1854, and was named for the Swedish soprano Jenny Lind. She married first, in 1874, at the British Embassy in Paris, France, Lord Randolph Henry Spencer-Churchill , third son of John Winston Spencer-Churchill, the 7th Duke of Marlborough. By this marriage, she acquired the title "Lady Randolph Churchill," and two sons, the first of who became Prime Minister. She died in 1921, and is buried in the Churchill family plot at St. Martin's Church, Bladon, Oxfordshire, England

Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill was an English statesman and author, best known as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom during World War II. He was born at Blenheim Palace, Woodstock, Oxfordshire, England on November 30, 1874, and was voted the greatest-ever Briton in the 2002 BBC poll of the 100 Greatest Britons. Churchill married Clementine Hozier on September 12, 1908, and they had five children. He was an orator, strategist and politician, and he was awarded the 1953 Nobel Prize in Literature for his many books on English and world history. Some have argued that he saved civilization itself by his defiance of Hitler and fascism in 1940. He served as Prime Minister from May 10, 1940 to July 27, 1945, and again, from October 26, 1951 to April 7, 1955. In 1963, by an act of the US Congress, Churchill was proclaimed the first Honorary Citizen of the United States. After his death on January 24, 1965, his body lay in State in Westminster Hall, London, and a state funeral was held at St. Paul's Cathedral. This was the first state funeral for a non-royal family member since 1914, and no other of its kind has been held since. Lizzie Borden, a New England spinster, was born July 19, 1860, and died June 1, 1927. Her father and stepmother were killed in a brutal axe double-murder, on August 4, 1892 in Fall River, Massachusetts. Lizzie was charged and subsequently acquitted, in a trial that is considered a landmark in media coverage of legal proceedings. She was memorialized in a popular jump-rope rhyme:

                    Lizzie Borden took an axe
                    And gave her mother forty whacks.
                    When she saw what she had done,
                    She gave her father forty-one.

Gail Borden, III was born in Norwich, New York in 1801.He eventually moved to Texas, where as a surveyor, he platted the towns of Houston and Galveston and as a newspaper owner and editor, he penned the headline, "Remember the Alamo!" He subsequently turned to inventing, and in the 1840's and 1850's, he perfected condensed milk, though he wasn't successful until he promoted it for soldiers in the Civil War. This invention led to the establishment of the famous Borden Milk Products company. Borden died in Borden, Texas on January 11, 1874, and was buried in White Plains, New York.
