John Thurman, husband of Mary (--?--), was a descendant of another John Thurman (husband of Anne Morecraft). John and Anne Morecraft Thurman came from England in 1638 with their children Elizabeth, Joan and John, and settled in James County, Virginia. They probably sailed with his brother-in-law Edmund Morecraft, a Virginia-London merchant, who was engaged also in transporting immigrants to America at his own expense in order to receive the fifty acres headright allowed for each person.
In 1756 John Thurman, the descendant of John and Anne Morecraft Thurman, moved with his wife Mary and their children, from Virginia to the southern border of Anson County, North Carolina. After John's death and prior to the Revolution, the family moved across the border into Cheraw District, now Chesterfield County, South Carolina, from where the sons Benjamin and Philip went to serve as soldiers in the cause of the Revolution.⁴
