Notable* | What was notable about Gov. Samuel Ward?5 Samuel Ward was born at Newport, Rhode Island on May 27, 1725, and married Anna Ray on December 20, 1745. He was elected Governor of Rhode Island in 1762; was succeeded by Stephen Hopkins (the eventual signer of the Declaration of Independence) in 1763; but was again elected in 1765, and continued in office until 1767. He was active in founding Rhode Island College, which was later renamed Brown University, and became a Trustee of the college from 1764 to 1776.
In 1774 he was appointed a delegate to the Continental Congress in Philadelphia, where he was serving as chairman of the committee of the whole, when he died suddenly of small pox, on March 26, 1776. He was serving as chairman at the time of the passage of the resolution authorizing the appointment of a general (i.e. George Washington) to command the Continental Forces, and was strongly in favor of a declaration of independence, but died before the final document was prepared.
