Jesse Webb Sr. Pension file S3501-Jesse stated that he enlisted in 1781 in Greene County, North Carolina under Captain Lusk who commanded a company in the North Carolina Regiment commanded by Colonel Middleton. The regiment was marched across the Santee River in South Carolina and later to Eutaw Springs where they joined in the battle there under General Nathaniel Greene, in the brigade under General Sumter. Later Jesse's company marched to Orangeburgh, South Carolina where they fought Tories until his term expired. Sometime after the war, Jesse was in Franklin County, Georgia. There is a record that he made a deed there in 1790 for 297.5 acres of a 1788 land grant. He received a land grant in Jefferson County, Tennessee in 1807, one of those first ones which indicated occupancy long before 1807. The Jesse Webb home was located at Chestnut Hill, the site now owned by Ruth & Hollis Thornton. The original log house burned. On Sunday afternoon, October 22, 1978 a stirring service of dedication of the marker for Jesse Webb was conducted in the Chestnut Hill Cemetery by Newport's William Cocke Chapter of the DAR. In 1767 he was listed as the 'viewer' of a road from McMurtry's mill through McAfee's gap, along the Catawba River. He reported that there was not enough 'tithables' to build a wagon road, so a horse trail was all that was practable at that time. The family migrated to Green County, North Carolina (now Tennessee). A sept is a group of people who allied together for political reasons, and are allowed to wear the tartan of the clan to which they are attached. Originally from Scotland, they lived in England and Wales before moving to Philadelphia in 1712. The original spelling may have been McMurtrie.1 |

The three brothers were Thomas, Robert and Joseph. A cousin, Alexander, may have been with them or joined them later. Anyway, they can be documented as of the 1740's in New Jersey. Thomas settled in Somerset County, NJ while Joseph and Robert settled in Sussex County, NJ. Alexander settled in Hunterdon County, NJ. Our family is descended from Joseph.1 |

father of John and Jesse Webb

Kinship* | Relationship: 6th great-grandfather. |
Note* | Father of John and Jesse Webb The 'Heirs of Thomas Webb' applied for and received 200 acres in Wilkes County, Georgia, from an old warrant. The land was located on the South Fork of the Broad River and was the same land that Jesse Webb agreed to make a good title to Nathan Barnett in 1783. Jesse is identified as heir of Thomas Webb. Receiving the grant was obviously part of clearing the title. Thomas Webb therefore was deceased by 1783 and had been a settler of Georgia from at least the beginning of the revolutionary war. The grant of 200 acres was the amount for a settler, but not a family. It is possible that Jesse did not apply for a larger amount of land because to increase the amount by 50 acres for each family member or slave caused a fee to be added for each. I do not know if Thomas was a father or brother to Jesse. Jesse's brother John was not mentioned, probably because John was by this time married and living in what is now East Tennessee. This is the closest record that I have been able to find regarding possible relatives of John and Jesse. I have seen many family histories that list their father as John Webb, but I have found no proof.1 |

Father | father of John and Jesse Webb1 |

Note* | John Webb John and Jesse Webb were Militia Soldiers during the Revolutionary War. In 1780 we find them stationed at Nail's Fort on the Broad River in Georgia. A search of John's (pension application number R11249) revolutionary war record at the national archives reveals that he was a private in the 2nd. company, Continental Artillery of Georgia from its inception until its reduction at Sunbury. Also he was taken prisoner and placed aboard a prison ship at Fort Morris near Sunbury. In late 1780 John Webb with his brother Jesse Webb, and many other militia soldiers were driven by British soldiers, Tories and Indians, from their camps on the Broad River in Georgia, across the Savanna River into South Carolina, then across the blue ridge and Iron mountains to the western slopes of the appalachian mountains, (at that time Washington County, North Carolina). This is how and why John and Jesse came to be in what is now East Tennessee. They made their first camp after leaving georgia on the Nolachucky river (in what is now East Tennessee) and rested their horses for 60 days. While here John Webb met and married ( February 1, 1781) a 14 year old young lady by the name of Elizabeth McMurtry. They were married by Rev. Isaac Burton in Green county, North Carolina (now Tennessee). At this point John quit the army and built a home and commenced farming near the home of Elizabeth's Mother and Father. Elizabeth McMurtry Webb stated in 1844 that her husband was an enlisted soldier in Georgia for eighteen months under Capt. John Stuard, and also that John Webb had acted as a spy. Jesse Webb, his brother, also affirmed that his brother had served two tours in that war. On 19 december 1792 (deed book B, page 245), John Webb received 100 acres (N.C. Grant #32) in Green County, adjoining William Nelson. This land was sold to Henry Rees on 6 January 1793, witnessed by John Henderson, James Henderson, and William Bell. In this deed John Webb is referred to as a resident of Jefferson County (on July 11, 1795 it became Sevier County) at the time of the sale and the land he sold was located in Greene County. A 1783/84 tax list for what is now Greene County includes the names John Webb and Joseph McMurtry as residents south of the French Broad. It is thought that the Webb and McMurtry families were neighbors near what is now Warrensburg, Tennessee. It appears that John Webb had moved to that part of Jefferson County which became Sevier County in 1795. Sevier County was established out of Jefferson County land's on July 11, 1795. The state of Tennessee was established June 1, 1796. Lands in this area were not granted between 1794 and 1809. John webb died 14 August 1798 in Sevier County, probably at the homeplace that was granted to Elizabeth may 3, 1810. (His grave is probably located on this land or in a nearby Methodist Church-yard Cemetery). The first land grant legislation passed by Tennessee legislature was 23 November 1809. The land grants of 1810, by the state of Tennessee were based on occupancy. Elizabeth Webb, widow of John Webb, was issued grant #758 for 216 acres May 3, 1810, the tract having been surveyed 12 June 1807.. The location was near Hettie Creek and little Mountain about one mile south of US Highway 411, between Fair Garden and Fox cemetery. The above grant would indicate that the recipient was an original settler, having staked out and occupied a homestead but not having a title to it until these first Tennessee grants were issued. This land grant, along with several others, was made on may 3, 1810, signed by William Blount, Governor of Tennessee. They were filed in Knox County, Tennessee because Knoxville was the state capital at that time. There was another grant for 50 acres to Elizabeth Webb dated 25 May 1837. The first Sevier County Survey Book indicated that Elizabeth Webb and sons Thomas, Jesse, and Joseph lived on Flat Creek (or Branch). Elizabeth McMurtry Webb died 10 Feb. 1848. The names and dates of birth of John Webb and Elizabeth McMurtry were included with the pension record of John Webb. The record also stated that all of the children, except Elizabeth Webb Baker, were deceased by 1853. In 1844 Elizabeth commenced the filing for a widows pension based on her deceased husband's Revolutionary War service. All her efforts came to nil, as the pension was not approved. The pension office indicated that she could not prove she was married to John. Martin Baker, husband of John and Elizabeth Webb's youngest daughter (also named Elizabeth), was still trying to collect on this pension on 7 March 1853. He stated that the only living child of John and Elizabeth webb was his wife Elizabeth, and since he was the administrator of his mother-in-law's estate, then the pension office should pay the money into the estate. This also came to nil, and pension # R11245 was never approved.1 |
