Julia Jean Mildred Frances "Lana" Turner was born in Wallace, Idaho on February 8, 1920. While a 16 year-old student at Hollywood High in Los Angeles, she was "discovered" in a local drug store, and went on to become one of Hollywood's most enduring show-business legends. She was best known as "The Sweater Girl," but was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress in Peyton Place. Her seven husbands included bandleader Artie Shaw and Lex Barker ("Tarzan"); and her boyfriend at Hollywood High was Joseph Wapner, who achieved his own fame on TV as the first judge on The People's Court. Lana died of throat cancer on June 29, 1995 in Los Angeles, having been a heavy smoker until her death.
