Born Leslie Lynch King Jr., Gerald Ford went on to become the only person to hold the office of President without having been elected either President or Vice President. Ford was born in Omaha, Nebraska on July 14, 1913, and his parents divorced soon after. When his mother Dorothy Gardner King remarried to Gerald Rudolff Ford, she began calling her son Gerald Rudolff Ford Jr. Ford was never formally adopted, but he did change his name legally to Gerald Rudolph Ford Jr. in 1935. While attending the University of Michigan, Ford played center and linebacker on undefeated national championship teams in 1932 and 1933. On October 15, 1948, Ford married Mrs. Elizabeth Ann "Betty" Bloomer Warren in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and was elected to the first of his 13 terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. After Spiro Agnew resigned in 1973, he was appointed Vice President, and subsequently became President on August 9, 1974 when Richard Nixon resigned. Ford's presidency included two assassination attempts (one by Squeaky Fromme, a Charles Manson follower), the final withdrawal of our troops from Vietnam, and his pardon of Richard Nixon. He reluctantly agreed to run for re-election in 1976, but was defeated by Jimmy Carter. Ford died on December 26, 2006 at Rancho Mirage, California, becoming the second President (with Harry Truman) to die on Boxing Day. He was the longest lived President, and only he, Reagan, John Adams and Herbert Hoover have lived to 90 years or more.
